Talk Like a Pirate Day: Learn English the Swashbuckling Way!

Updated: 5 days ago

Ahoy there, English learners! Did you know there’s a whole day where people around the world speak like pirates? It’s called Talk Like a Pirate Day, and it’s one of the most fun ways to practice English—especially if you enjoy silly voices, sea adventures, and treasure maps!

Where Did Talk Like a Pirate Day Come From?

Talk Like a Pirate Day began in 1995, when two friends from Oregon, USA—John Baur and Mark Summers—started joking around during a game of racquetball. They began shouting pirate phrases like “Arrr!” and “Avast!” just for fun. Later, they decided to make it official and chose September 19th as the day to celebrate.

The idea spread quickly, especially after humour columnist Dave Barry wrote about it in 2002. Now, people all over the world join in—schools, offices, and even restaurants get involved!

🦜 Why Celebrate It?

Because it’s fun! Talk Like a Pirate Day is a great excuse to:
