English reading practice -Birth of Florence Nightingale (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

Florence Nightingale is an important person in healthcare and nursing history. She was born in Florence, Italy on this day 12th May 1820. Her family was rich, but she wanted to be a nurse instead of getting married and being a socialite.

She went to Germany to learn how to be a nurse and then became the boss of a women's hospital in London. In 1854, during the Crimean War, she was asked to go to Turkey to help British soldiers who were hurt. She found the hospital was very dirty and didn't have what it needed to help the soldiers. Florence worked hard to make things better, and the number of people who died went down a lot.

Florence Nightingale is famous for being a leader in modern nursing. She wanted people to have special education and training to be a nurse. She made schools and programs for nursing in many places. Her book, "Notes on Nursing," is still used in many schools.

Florence Nightingale also cared about women's rights. She wanted women to have the same chances as men and worked to make things better for women's health, education, and jobs. She also worked on public health and sanitation, making things better for many people.

Today, Florence Nightingale still inspires healthcare and nursing. Her hard work for patients, her belief in nursing education, and her work in public health and social change have encouraged many generations of nurses and healthcare workers. She was the first woman to get the Order of Merit, one of the highest honours in the United Kingdom.
