English reading practice - Birth of Wedgwood (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

In the world of desired pottery and ceramics, there is one famous name that stands out: Wedgwood. Their beautiful creations have been used in homes for many years, making people who love pottery really happy. The person behind this famous brand is Josiah Wedgwood, a talented artist and businessperson known for his high-quality and stylish products.

Josiah Wedgwood was born on this day 12th July 1730, in Staffordshire, England. He grew up in a family of potters, being the youngest of 12 children. Unfortunately, when he was a child, he got sick with smallpox, which made his knee weak and prevented him from using the potter's wheel. But instead of giving up, this challenge motivated him to find new ways to improve pottery and make his artistic ideas come to life.

Wedgwood was determined to become the best and tried out different techniques and materials. He became famous for his special way of glazing ceramics and making fine pottery. He even created a type of pottery called Jasperware, which is smooth and has pretty designs. This was a big achievement for him and made him very respected in the pottery industry.

Wedgwood was not only good at making pottery, but he was also great at combining art and craftsmanship. He worked with well-known artists of his time, like George Stubbs and John Flaxman, to make his creations even more beautiful. His pottery designs often showed scenes from old stories and classical art, which showed his love for both art and craft.

Josiah Wedgwood cared about more than just pottery. He had strong beliefs and wanted to make a difference in the world. He spoke out against slavery and used his success in business to help the fight against it. He even made a special medallion with the image of a slave in chains and the words, "Am I not a man and a brother?" This became a famous symbol for the termination of slavery and inspired many people.

Wedgwood's contributions to pottery and beyond were very important. He set new standards for quality, innovation, and social responsibility in the industry. The Wedgwood company, which he started in 1759, still exists today and makes beautiful pottery. The blue and white Jasperware, the famous Wedgwood cameo, and the detailed designs are all part of the brand's identity and are loved by collectors all over the world.

Furthermore, Wedgwood's passion for fairness and doing good had a lasting impact. His fight against slavery and his belief in using art to bring about change inspired others. He showed that it is possible to have a successful business while making a positive difference in society.

Today, we admire and appreciate Wedgwood's timeless creations. We remember Josiah Wedgwood as a talented artist and a person who made a lasting impression on the world of luxury pottery.
