English reading practice - Butlin's - the First Holiday Park (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

Butlins Holiday Parks are popular holiday destinations in the UK. But did you know that the first one was created over 80 years ago? The idea came from a man named Billy Butlin who wanted to make a fun place for families to go on holiday.

The first park was in Skegness, a small town near the coast and opened on this day 11th April 1936. It had a big swimming pool, a funfair with rides, a cinema to watch movies, and even a zoo with animals. It was very affordable for families who couldn't go on holiday otherwise.

The park was a huge success, and more parks were opened in different parts of the UK. During World War II, the parks were used to help people who had to leave their homes. After the war, the parks reopened to the public, and Butlin continued to add new things like water slides, sports, and special weekends with different themes.

Today, Butlins Holiday Parks are still very popular with families. There are many things to do, like watching live music, comedy acts, and circus shows. There are also outdoor activities like archery, rock climbing, and zip-lining. You can stay in different types of accommodation like apartments or caravans depending on your preference and budget.

Do you have holiday parks like Butlin's where you live? Have you ever stayed in a Butlin's park? Let me know in the comments.
