English reading practice - Butlin's - the First Holiday Park (C1/C2 Advanced learners)

When we think of holiday parks, we might picture sprawling resorts filled with modern amenities and attractions. But did you know that the first-ever holiday park in the UK was created over 80 years ago by a man named Billy Butlin? That’s right; Butlins Holiday Parks have a long and fascinating history that has been entertaining generations of families for decades.

Billy Butlin was born in 1899 in South Africa, but he spent most of his life in the UK. He got his start in the entertainment business by managing a travelling fairground in the 1920s. However, he soon realized that he wanted to create something bigger and better, something that would provide affordable holiday fun for everyone.

On this day 11th April 1936, Butlin opened his first holiday park in Skegness, a small coastal town in Lincolnshire. The park was an immediate success, offering affordable accommodation, entertainment, and activities for families who would otherwise not be able to afford a holiday. The park featured a large swimming pool, a funfair, a cinema, and even a zoo. Butlin’s motto was “Our True Intent Is All For Your Delight,” and he aimed to make sure that every guest had a good time.

Over the years, Butlins Holiday Parks grew in popularity, and more parks were opened in different parts of the UK. During World War II, the parks were used to house evacuees and later served as army camps. Butlin himself served in the Royal Air Force during the war and was awarded an OBE for his services to the military.

After the war, the parks reopened to the public, and Butlin continued to innovate and expand. He introduced new attractions such as water slides and sports facilities and created themed breaks, such as “School’s Out” and “60s Weekends.” Butlin also invested in his staff, providing them with training and opportunities for career advancement.

Today, Butlins Holiday Parks are still going strong, offering a range of accommodation options and entertainment for families. However, the parks have changed with the times, and the attractions are now more modern and diverse than ever before. Guests can enjoy live music, comedy acts, circus shows, and much more. There are also plenty of outdoor activities, such as archery, rock climbing, and zip-lining.

They started with a man who wanted to provide affordable holiday fun for everyone whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, Butlins has something for everyone.
