English reading practice - Cheese Roll (C1/C2 Advanced learners)

Each day I usually write about something that happened on that day in history in the UK. During October I am changing the format to some of our more unusual traditions, laws and celebrations. I hope you enjoy it.

In the quaint English countryside of Gloucestershire, nestled amid rolling hills and lush greenery, lies a tradition unlike any other – the Cooper's Hill Cheese Roll. This thrilling, gravity-defying event has become a beloved spectacle, drawing participants and spectators from around the world.

The origins of the Cooper's Hill Cheese Roll are shrouded in mystery, but it is believed to have been celebrated for centuries. The event, which traditionally takes place on the Spring Bank Holiday in late May, has evolved from a simple village tradition into a world-famous event that attracts daredevils and thrill-seekers.

The star of the show is, of course, the cheese itself. A hefty wheel of Double Gloucester cheese, weighing approximately 7-9 pounds (3-4kg), is rolled down the steep hill. Contestants, who line up at the starting line at the top of the hill, must chase after it. The objective? To reach the bottom of the hill first with the released cheese.

The Cooper's Hill Cheese Roll may sound like an amusing pastime, but it's far from a leisurely stroll. Cooper's Hill is infamous for its steep incline, characterised by an incline of around 200 meters with a gradient of 1 in 2, making it virtually vertical. As competitors fling themselves down the hill in pursuit of the cheese, they face a harrowing descent that can see them tumbling head over heels.

The rules are simple: the first person to cross the finish line at the bottom of the hill with the cheese in hand is declared the winner and gets to keep the cheese. However, given the incredible speed the cheese reaches (up to 70 mph), this is a rare occurrence. More often than not, contestants find themselves tumbling, somersaulting, and rolling their way down the hill, giving spectators plenty of laughter and gasps.

In recent years, safety concerns have led to changes in the Cooper's Hill Cheese Roll. Due to the high risk of injury, particularly with the steep gradient, organisers have taken measures to ensure the event remains enjoyable without putting lives at risk. The official cheese used in the event is no longer a full, solid wheel, but a foam replica. This modification reduces the risk of injuries while retaining the essence of the competition.

The event now features various categories, including a children's race and a downhill sprint, which allows participants to experience the thrill of the hill without the intense danger. However, the main race remains the highlight, drawing daredevils and curious tourists alike.

The Cooper's Hill Cheese Roll is more than just a quirky tradition; it's a celebration of camaraderie, courage, and the enduring spirit of adventure. Participants and spectators gather annually to witness this unique event, indulging in laughter, excitement, and perhaps a bit of cheese. There is even a documentary on Netflix about the competition.

As we watch competitors hurl themselves down the hill, we're reminded that traditions like these are not merely spectacles but an embodiment of the human spirit's desire to challenge the limits of physicality and defy gravity, all in the name of a good time. While the Cooper's Hill Cheese Roll may have adapted to modern safety standards, its heart remains rooted in the timeless pursuit of daring feats, reminding us that sometimes the most exhilarating moments in life are the ones that leave us rolling with laughter.
