The origins of the Cooper's Hill Cheese Roll are shrouded in mystery, but it is believed to have been celebrated for centuries. The event, which traditionally takes place on the Spring Bank Holiday in late May, has evolved from a simple village tradition into a world-famous event that attracts daredevils and thrill-seekers.
The star of the show is, of course, the cheese itself. A hefty wheel of Double Gloucester cheese, weighing approximately 7-9 pounds (3-4kg), is rolled down the steep hill. Contestants, who line up at the starting line at the top of the hill, must chase after it. The objective? To reach the bottom of the hill first with the released cheese.

Due to the high risk of injury, particularly with the steep gradient, organisers have taken measures to ensure the event remains enjoyable without putting lives at risk. The official cheese used in the event is no longer a full, solid wheel, but a foam replica. This modification reduces the risk of injuries while retaining the essence of the competition.
The event now features various categories, including a children's race and a downhill sprint, which allows participants to experience the thrill of the hill without the intense danger. However, the main race remains the highlight, drawing daredevils and curious tourists alike.
