English reading practice - Common Lizard (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

Hello, nature lovers and curious friends! Welcome to the amazing world of the Common Lizard, a little hero in the United Kingdom's nature story. Even though they are small, these lizards are important for our environment and make it more interesting.

Imagine walking in a sunny meadow or on a rocky hill – the places where the Common Lizard lives and trying to find our stars for today. These small reptiles are about 12 to 15 centimetres long and are really good at hiding. They can blend into the green plants or the rocks, making them hard to see.

Common Lizards come in different colours, like browns to match the tree bark and greens to match the moss and leaves. We can find them in the Scottish Highlands or an English forest as they live in many different environments.

The way Common Lizards have babies is special. Unlike most reptiles that lay eggs, these lizards give birth to live babies. This is called viviparity. The baby lizards develop inside the mother's body, which helps them grow better and stay safe.

This way of having babies is important for the Common Lizard because it helps them survive in the changing environments of the United Kingdom. The weather here can be hot one day and cold the next, and viviparity lets the baby lizards grow in the best conditions.

On a warm summer day, you might see a Common Lizard sunbathing. They stretch out on a rock or a log to soak up the sun and get energy for their day. They have to find hot places to warm up and cold places to cool down they need to move to different places to control their body temperature.

Common Lizards are serious about finding food. They eat insects, spiders, and small creatures. Watching them hunt is like seeing a perfect performance – they are quick and skilled. In the world of the lizard, every sound or movement could mean a tasty meal.

Even though they might seem small, Common Lizards are important for nature. They help keep the balance by controlling insect numbers and recycling nutrients. They show us that even the smallest animals play a big role in nature's symphony.

But, these tiny heroes are facing challenges. Losing their homes, changes in the weather, and human activities are making life difficult for them. We need to protect where they live and tell others about them so they can keep thriving.

Are you excited to go on your Common Lizard adventure? You can find them in the misty moors of Wales or the sunny meadows of England. Put on your walking shoes and coat, get ready to explore, and let the Common Lizard share its secrets with you.

As we explore the amazing world of the Common Lizard, we learn that even the smallest animals have incredible stories of strength, change, and breathtaking beauty. Come with me on this journey into the hidden places of the UK, where the Common Lizard shows us the wonders of our own backyards.
