English reading practice -Cromer Pier (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

Cromer Pier is a beautiful place on the coast of Norfolk. It has been a popular spot for entertainment and leisure for a long time. The pier has been through a lot, surviving storms and changing over the years.

In 1391, wooden jetties were built as a place for boats to land. This was the start of what would become Cromer Pier. The history of Cromer Pier goes back to the 19th century when people started to visit the seaside more often.

In 1901, engineer John Cox redesigned the pier and made it even more impressive and opened to the public on this day 8th June the same year. The new pier was completed in 1902 and had a pavilion and a theatre. It became a popular destination for people from all over the country.

During the early 20th century, Cromer Pier was a lively place with shows, concerts, and performances. People enjoyed watching talented artists such as comedians and magicians. The pier was filled with laughter and applause.

During World War II, the pier was damaged, but it was restored in 1958 and became even better than before. The original pavilion was replaced with a modern theatre designed by architect R. W. Armstrong.

Throughout the years, Cromer Pier has changed with the times while keeping its charm. The theatre became known for its variety shows, and people of all ages loved watching the talented performers.

Today, Cromer Pier is a beloved place that attracts visitors all year round. People enjoy not only the shows but also the beautiful views of the coastline and the North Sea. Visitors can take a walk on the pier, enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere, and have some delicious ice cream or fish and chips.

Cromer Pier is not just a part of the past. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving historical places. Efforts have been made to maintain and restore the pier so that future generations can enjoy its beauty.

Despite facing challenges like storms and accidents, Cromer Pier still stands strong. It is the only pier in the world with an end-of-the-pier summer variety show, showing that it can adapt to changing times.

Cromer Pier is a special place that brings people together and creates shared experiences. It reminds us of the value of community spaces and the joy they can bring. Let's appreciate and preserve this wonderful piece of history for many more years to come.
