English reading practice - First British Traffic Light (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

In 1926, something very important happened in the busy streets of Piccadilly, London. It changed how people travelled in cities forever. At that time, there were new inventions and technology improving many things. One special invention was created – the first set of electric traffic lights in Britain. This was a big step in how traffic was managed and made roads safer.

Around the 1920s, the streets in Piccadilly were very busy because a lot of people were moving to cities and using cars. This caused a lot of traffic jams and dangerous roads. People had a hard time walking and driving, so there was a need for a system to make things better and safer.

Here comes the electric traffic light – a clever idea that had already worked in places like New York and Detroit. The idea was simple but smart: use different coloured lights to tell cars when to stop, when to be careful, and when to go. This helped bring order to the chaos of Piccadilly's streets.

On this day 3rd August 1926 the busy crossing in Piccadilly got its first electric traffic lights. These lights stood up tall and showed red, yellow, and green colours to everyone. These colours told drivers and people walking what to do – stop, be careful, or go ahead. This new system made things less confusing and made accidents happen less often.

The electric traffic lights made a big change in how cities worked. The biggest change was that there were fewer accidents. The lights showed clearly when to walk and when to drive, so people didn't crash into each other as much. Also, the lights made people feel like they had to follow the rules, which made driving safer. This feeling of needing to follow the rules is important and still helps people drive safely today.

The success of the first electric traffic lights didn't just stay in Piccadilly. The idea became popular and spread to many other places in the country. It became a normal part of how cities were planned and built. The good ideas from these first traffic lights helped design roads, make better traffic signals, and even influence how traffic laws are enforced.

In the end, the first electric traffic lights in Britain made a big difference. They made roads safer and helped cities grow in a good way. So, every time you see traffic lights on the street, remember that they have a long and important history in England, starting with those bright lights in Piccadilly in 1926.
