English reading practice -First Daily Evening Newspaper Published (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

Historically newspapers were usually printed in the morning. But on 3rd May 1784, the Star and Evening Advertiser changed that by becoming the first daily evening newspaper to be published in London. This was a big deal and had a big effect on how people got their news.

The Star and Evening Advertiser was made by Richard Wright and was first printed on a single sheet of paper with only four pages. It cost one penny, which made it cheap for people to buy and it quickly became popular.

One reason why it was so popular was that it focused on local news. It told people about what was happening in their own communities, like crime, politics, entertainment, and sports.

The Star and Evening Advertiser also did new things that later became normal to find in newspapers. It was the first newspaper to predict the weather and it had adverts where people could buy and sell things.

Because the Star and Evening Advertiser was successful, other newspapers started to come out in the evening too. This meant that people had more ways to get news and information, which helped them understand the world better.

Today, newspapers have changed a lot and many of them are digital, but the Star and Evening Advertiser was important because it changed how people got their news a long time ago.
