English reading practice - First OBE (C1/C2 Advanced learners)

Many of the people I write about have received a special award called an OBE, but what is it exactly, and when did it start?

The history of the United Kingdom has lots of stories about its culture, military, and impressive achievements. Part of this history is the Order of the British Empire (OBE), a special award given to people who have done great things in different areas. It began in 1917 and shows how dedicated and excellent people are when they want to help society. The very first OBE was given on this day 25th August 1917.

The Order of the British Empire started during World War I. King George V, who was a king at that time, wanted to honour the hard work of regular people and soldiers. So, on June 4th, 1917, he made the Order of the British Empire to say thank you to those who did important things in different parts of life.

The Order of the British Empire is famous because it means a lot to those who have been awarded it. It's not just a prize for one person; it's like a big applause for everyone in the country. This award has five levels that show how much someone has achieved. The levels are like steps, and they are:

  1. Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE)

  2. Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)

  3. Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE)

  4. Knight or Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE/DBE)

  5. Knight or Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE)

This special order celebrates success in many areas, like art, science, helping others, and even in the military.

To get the OBE, people are looked at very carefully. People can suggest names for this award, like when you suggest a friend for a special prize. People from the government and other groups also give suggestions. Then, a team checks each suggestion to make sure it's right for the OBE.

Through the years, the OBE has changed with how society changes. It has been given to people who do good things not only in the UK but also in other places. This award helps people work together from different countries. The many different people who get the OBE show how much it can make the world better and bring new ideas and ways of doing things.
