English reading practice - George Orwell's Birth (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

Some writers are very special because their books are loved by many people for many years. One of those writers is George Orwell. He wrote famous books like "1984" and "Animal Farm." Orwell was really good at understanding and criticising the problems in society. He also had smart ideas about power and how we use language. That's why people think he's a great writer.

George Orwell was born on this day 25th June 1903. He grew up in India but later moved to England. The things he saw when he was young made him care a lot about unfairness and governments that have too much control. These things had a big influence on his writing. Orwell used to be a police officer in Burma, which is why he wanted to show everyone how dangerous it is when people have too much power.

tired of being treated badly by humans. They rebel and take over the farm, but then things start to go wrong. Orwell wanted to show how revolutions can sometimes lead to bad things, like when the new leaders become just as bad as the old ones. This book is a warning about how power can change people and make them do bad things.

"1984" is Orwell's most famous book. He wrote it in 1949. The story takes place in a scary future where the government controls everything. People are watched all the time, and they can't say what they really think. The Party, led by a mysterious person called Big Brother, has complete control over everyone's lives. They change history and make it hard for people to think for themselves. The book has ideas like Newspeak, where words are changed so people can't express themselves, and the Thought Police, which punish people for thinking differently. These ideas have become well-known and show how dangerous it is when governments have too much power.

Even though Orwell wrote a long time ago, his books are still important today. The things he wrote about, like too much surveillance and the way language can be used to control people, are similar to things happening now. Orwell understood people and power very well, which is why his books are still loved by so many people.

Orwell believed in truth, honesty, and fairness, and these things are still really important today. In a time when there is a lot of false information and lies, Orwell reminds us how important it is to think for ourselves and be careful about what we believe.

George Orwell was an amazing writer because he could see the problems in society and talk about them in a way that everyone can understand. His books like "Animal Farm" and "1984" are loved by people all over the world. They teach us about the dangers of too much power, the loss of our freedom, and how language can be used to control us. As we live in a world that keeps changing, Orwell's words remind us to always be aware, look for the truth, and fight for our rights.
