Hans Christian Andersen was a famous Danish writer who lived in the 19th century. Andersen was born on this day in 1805 (2nd April) in the town of Odense in Denmark. His family were very poor, and he had a difficult childhood. When he was just 11 years old, his father died, and Andersen had to work to help support his family. Despite his hardships, he loved to read and write stories.

In 1822, Andersen moved to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, to pursue a career in the theatre. However, his acting career didn't take off, and he turned to writing instead. He started by writing plays, but he soon realized that he had a talent for writing stories.

In 1835, Andersen published his first book of fairy tales, which included famous stories like "The Princess and the Pea" and "The Little Mermaid." Over the next few years, he wrote many more fairy tales, including "The Ugly Duckling," "Thumbelina," and "The Snow Queen."

Andersen's fairy tales were very popular, and he became famous all over Europe. He even travelled to England and met Queen Victoria. Andersen continued to write until his death in 1875. He wrote over 150 fairy tales in total, many of which are still beloved today.
