English reading practice - Hans Christian Anderson (C1/C2 Advanced learners)

Hans Christian Andersen is one of the most famous writers in history, known for his captivating fairy tales and children's stories that continue to enchant readers of all ages to this day. Born in 1805 in the town of Odense, Denmark, Andersen had a difficult upbringing. His family was poor, and his father passed away when he was just eleven years old. Despite these challenges, Andersen developed a love for storytelling and writing from a young age.

As a young adult, Andersen moved to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, in hopes of pursuing a career in the theatre. However, his dreams of becoming an actor were dashed, and he instead turned to writing. He began by writing plays, but it was his fairy tales that captured the hearts and imaginations of readers around the world.

Andersen published his first collection of fairy tales in 1835, which included beloved stories such as "The Princess and the Pea," "The Ugly Duckling," and "The Little Mermaid." His tales were different from traditional folk tales in that they often included deeper themes and lessons. For example, "The Ugly Duckling" tells the story of a young bird who is ostracised for being different, but ultimately learns to embrace his uniqueness and find his place in the world. Similarly, "The Little Mermaid" explores the complexities of love and sacrifice.

Andersen's fairy tales quickly gained popularity and were translated into numerous languages, making him a literary sensation across Europe. He travelled extensively throughout his life, meeting with other famous writers and literary figures of his time. In 1847, he travelled to England, where he met with Queen Victoria and Charles Dickens, two of the most prominent cultural figures of the day.

Throughout his life, Andersen continued to write fairy tales, novels, and travelogues, all of which were well-received by readers and critics alike. He wrote over 150 fairy tales in total, and his influence on children's literature can still be seen today.
