English reading practice - Man of many Voices (C1/C2 Advanced learners)

In entertainment, there are unsung heroes whose talents shape our childhood memories and bring beloved characters to life. Peter Hawkins, a renowned voice-over artist, is one such individual whose voice resonated with generations. From the charming Daleks in Doctor Who to the lovable Bill and Ben, his vocal range and versatility made him a household name.


Peter Hawkins possessed a rare gift—the ability to morph his voice into a multitude of characters, each with a distinct personality and charm. Whether it was the mechanical and chilling tones of the Daleks or the gentle and mischievous voices of Bill and Ben, his vocal performances captured the essence of the characters he portrayed. From animated series to commercials, Hawkins lent his voice to a wide array of projects, showcasing his versatility as a voice actor.


One of Peter Hawkins' most notable achievements was his contribution to the long-running British science fiction series, Doctor Who. It was his voice that brought the menacing and robotic Daleks to life. Hawkins' ability to infuse the Daleks' voices with an otherworldly quality, combined with their chilling catchphrase "Exterminate!", struck fear into the hearts of viewers, making the Daleks one of the most iconic villains in television history.



In addition to his work on Doctor Who, Peter Hawkins endeared himself to young audiences as the voice of Bill and Ben, the Flowerpot Men. These lovable characters, with their playful banter and misadventures, became household favourites for generations. Hawkins' ability to bring the characters to life through his vocal talents, injecting them with warmth and humour, contributed to the enduring popularity of Bill and Ben.


Peter Hawkins' talent and dedication to his craft have left an impact on the world of voice acting and popular culture. He passed away on this day 8th July 2006 at the age of 82 but will always be remembered through the characters he voiced.
