English reading practice - Murder Mystery (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

The story of Jack the Ripper, a famous but unknown serial killer, still interests and scares us today. His first (known) murder happened on this day 7th August. This event is very mysterious and still makes people feel uneasy.

It was the year 1888, and London was a city with big differences. Some parts were getting better with money and new inventions, but other parts had many poor people and unfair treatment. The East End, especially, was a place with lots of crime, too many people, and not enough money, making it a bad place to live with many crimes taking place.

A woman named Mary Ann Nichols, who was 42 years old, became the first known victim of Jack the Ripper. She was poor and struggled to get by on the tough streets of Whitechapel. She was killed by a mysterious person, and her name became a part of history.

Early on August 7th, people found Mary Ann Nichols murdered on a street that used to be called Bucks Row (now it's called Durward Street). Her throat was cut and her belly was sliced too. This was a terrible and violent thing to do. Even the police were surprised by how bad it was. Because of how the cuts were made, some people thought the person who did it might know about bodies and how they work, maybe even a doctor.

After Mary Ann Nichols was killed, the police tried to find the person who did it, they named him 'Jack the Ripper'. They looked everywhere in Whitechapel, talked to people who saw things, and even said they would give money to anyone who could help catch the person. But Jack the Ripper was too smart and escaped from the police. This made people in the city very worried and scared.

The first murder that Jack the Ripper did had a big effect on how people tried to solve crimes. It showed that it's very hard to catch someone especially if they know a lot about the human body and how people think. This case also taught people that it's important to save the place where a crime happened and the things there, which helped make science better at solving crimes.

This sad event was just the start. There were at least five more terrible crimes that Jack the Ripper did. These crimes made detectives confused and made people very worried for a long time. Even today, when we look back at this scary part of history, we remember that these mysteries keep making us think, even in the modern world.
