English reading practice - Queen Elizabeth I [1558-1603] Funeral (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

Queen Elizabeth I, was a very important queen of England. She became queen in 1558 and ruled until her death in 1603. She was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. During her reign, England saw many important changes and developments, including the defeat of the Spanish Armada and the expansion of the British Empire.



Queen Elizabeth I died on March 24, 1603, when she was 69 years old. Her funeral was held at Westminster Abbey on this day 28th April 1603. The procession started at Whitehall Palace, where the Queen's body had been lying in state for several days. Her coffin was placed on a decorated hearse, and it was pulled by four horses.


The procession was led by many important people, including members of the royal family and other important people. There were also musicians who played sad music as the procession moved towards Westminster Abbey. Many people came to pay their respects to the Queen along the route.


At Westminster Abbey, the Queen's coffin was placed in the middle of the choir. The Archbishop of Canterbury conducted the funeral service, which was attended by many people.



After the service, the Queen's coffin was lowered into a vault beneath the choir. The funeral was a sad and serious occasion, as it was a final goodbye to a queen who had done so much for her country. Queen Elizabeth I, is remembered as a strong and intelligent leader. Her legacy is still important to this day.
