Amidst this remarkable period, the mile run emerged as the stage for a battle of giants, as Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe, two of the era's most celebrated middle-distance runners, relentlessly chased the coveted world record. This record then remained unbeaten until 1985 when it was then broken by another Brit.
