English reading practice -Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Born (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a famous writer best known for his detective stories. He created the character Sherlock Holmes, who is still very popular. Doyle was born on this day 22nd May 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was interested in stories and adventure from a young age. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, and his experiences there influenced his writing, especially the character of Sherlock Holmes, who was good at making observations and solving mysteries.



In 1887, Doyle introduced Sherlock Holmes to the world in a book called "A Study in Scarlet." Holmes is a detective who solves crimes with his friend Dr. John Watson. People loved Holmes' clever thinking and unique personality. He became very famous, and Doyle wrote many more stories and books about him.


Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories changed detective fiction. At that time, crime stories were usually about exciting and dramatic events. But Holmes was different.
