English reading practice -Sir Bobby Charlton (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

In the world of football, there are some players who make a big impact. One of those players is Sir Bobby Charlton, who played for Manchester United and England. On this day, 14th June 1970, Charlton played his last international match for England, which was his 106th game.


Bobby Charlton was born on October 11, 1937, in Ashington, England. He was a very talented player from a young age. He became an important player for Manchester United, playing in the midfield. Charlton was great at many things, like controlling the ball and shooting with power.


During the 1960s, Charlton had the best time of his career. He helped England win the World Cup in 1966 and Manchester United win the European Cup in 1968, and he was Manchester United's team's captain during this match. This made him a famous and respected football player.


On June 14, 1970, Bobby Charlton played his last game for England. It was in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup against West Germany in Mexico. England lost a close game, 3-2 after extra time. This was the end of Charlton's international career.


Even though England lost, Charlton showed his talent and dedication in his last game. He played with grace, skill, and determination, just like he did throughout his career. It was a sad moment for fans and his teammates because they had to say goodbye to one of the best players of his time.


Bobby Charlton's impact on football went beyond his playing days. He was respected and admired for his behaviour both on and off the field. He was only cautioned twice in his whole career, once against Argentina in the 1966 World Cup and the other in a league match against Chelsea. His humility and good sportsmanship inspired many players and fans around the world. In 1969 he was awarded the OBE, CBE and was later knighted for services to football.



After retiring, Charlton continued to contribute to football. He became a coach and ambassador for Manchester United. He helped young players and made sure the club stayed successful. Charlton's style of play, with his skills, vision, and powerful shots, influenced how midfielders play today. He set a high standard for future footballers to follow.


Bobby Charlton's last international match marked the end of a great time in English football. His talent, leadership, and sportsmanship made him loved by football fans everywhere.
