English reading practice - Solo Rower Crosses Atlantic (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

John Fairfax, a man who was very determined and brave, did something amazing. He rowed across the huge Atlantic Ocean all by himself. He didn't have a big boat, just a small rowboat, but he didn't give up. His incredible journey inspired people all around the world.

John Fairfax was born in 1937 in Rome, Italy. His dad was from Britain, and his mum was from Bulgaria. When he was young, he loved hearing stories about exploring and going on adventures. He especially liked hearing about sailors who travelled across the oceans. He wanted to do something like that too. It was a dream that he couldn't stop thinking about, and it pushed him to do something incredible.

In 1969, when he was 32 years old, John Fairfax started his big journey. He left from the Canary Islands, which are near Africa. He rowed all by himself in a small boat called the "Britannia." The boat was only 24 feet long, and he didn't have many supplies. But he didn't let that stop him. He used his arms to row and never gave up. The boat was a safe place for him while he faced the huge open sea.

During his journey, John faced many difficult challenges. He had to deal with dangerous storms, giant waves, and really hot weather. Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. He was always tired, hardly getting any sleep, and always worried that the boat might tip over. It was really hard, but he never gave up. He showed how tough and strong he was, facing the harshest part of nature.

After a long and difficult trip that lasted 180 days, on this day 19th July 1969, John Fairfax finally arrived in Florida. He had rowed more than 4,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean. This was an amazing achievement that will always be remembered. John became the first person ever known to row by themselves across an ocean. It was a special thing that put his name in the history books.

John Fairfax proved that if you have a clear goal, keep trying no matter what, and stay strong, you can overcome really hard challenges.
