English reading practice - St George's Day (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

Saint (St.) George's Day is a special day in England. It is celebrated on this day April 23rd every year to remember the patron saint of England, St. George. He was a brave Roman soldier who lived a long time ago. People like to tell a story about him fighting a dragon and saving a village. This story means that good is stronger than evil and people think of St. George as a symbol of English pride.

St. George's Day is not as famous as other national days, like St. Patrick's Day in Ireland or St. David's Day in Wales. One reason is that it is not a public holiday in England. Also, some people do not know why it is important.

But more and more people are becoming interested in St. George's Day. They want to celebrate the culture and identity of England. People celebrate by having a special meal of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, followed by a traditional English dessert like apple pie. Many restaurants and pubs offer special menus and events. People also like to watch parades and listen to music. It is a day to have fun and learn about English history and culture.

St. George's Day is also important for some religious groups. They go to church to pray and think about the values that St. George showed, like being brave and having faith.
