English reading practice - St. John Ambulance (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

St. John Ambulance is an important organisation that helps people in need around the world. It started a long time ago, in the 19th century. But its origins can be traced back even further, to knights who provided medical help to people going on pilgrimages many centuries ago.

In the 19th century, an Englishman named Sir John Furley saw soldiers suffering in war and wanted to help. So, on this day 24th June 1877, he formed the Order of St. John, which later became known as St. John Ambulance. The organisation grew quickly and trained many volunteers to give first aid and help in emergencies.

During World War I, St. John Ambulance was very important in helping wounded soldiers. This made people appreciate their work even more. After World War II, St. John Ambulance started offering more medical services, like running hospitals and clinics. They also expanded their work to other countries.

St. John Ambulance believes in teaching people how to help in emergencies. They offer courses to teach first aid to everyone, from regular people to healthcare professionals. They also raise awareness about important health topics, like CPR and using defibrillators. They want to empower individuals and communities to be prepared for emergencies and make a positive difference.

St. John Ambulance always adapts to changes and uses the latest technology to help people. They are known for their advanced equipment and training methods. They continue to provide medical treatment, community health programmes, and disaster relief services around the world.

St. John Ambulance is not just about first aid. They also care about public health and teach people things like CPR, defibrillators, and how to keep places sanitary. They want everyone to be ready to help and make a difference in their communities.
