English reading practice - The First Mobile Phone Call (C1/C2 Advanced learners)

On this day, 3rd April 1973, a revolutionary event occurred in the world of technology. Martin Cooper, an engineer at Motorola, made the first-ever mobile phone call. The call was a historic moment that marked the beginning of a new era of mobile communication.

The device Martin Cooper used to make the first mobile phone call was a huge contraption weighing approximately 1 kg and measuring about 10 inches long. It was called the DynaTAC 8000x and was the first commercially available mobile phone. It cost £3995 at the time equal to about £9500 in today's money.

To make the call, Martin Cooper dialled the number of Joel Engel, a researcher at Bell Labs, Motorola's competitor. From the corner of Sixth Avenue in New York, with the DynaTAC in his hand, he spoke into it and said, "Joel, this is Marty. I'm calling you from a mobile phone, a real handheld portable mobile phone." The call was a playful dig at his friend and rival who had been focused on developing a car-based phone system, Motorola wanted to show them that their vision for a truly portable phone was the future.

The call lasted just a few minutes, but it had an indelible impact on the world. It paved the way for the development of smaller and more portable mobile phones, which have now become a ubiquitous part of modern life. Today, we use mobile phones not only for calls, but also for messaging, browsing the internet, taking photos, and staying connected with people around the world.

The first mobile phone call was a significant achievement, but it was not the work of a single individual. Martin Cooper was part of a team at Motorola that worked tirelessly to develop the technology that made mobile communication possible. It was their hard work and dedication that made the first mobile phone call possible. It heralded a new era of mobile communication that has revolutionized the way we communicate and connect with one another. The mobile phone has become an indispensable part of modern life, and it all started with that first phone call made by Martin Cooper.
