English reading practice -The Guinness World Records (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

Since it started in 1955, the Guinness World Records has amazed people all over the world. It is the authority on extraordinary achievements and is known worldwide.

The idea for the Guinness World Records came from settling friendly arguments in the pubs in the United Kingdom. Sir Hugh Beaver, who worked for Guinness Brewery, had the idea during a conversation about the fastest game bird in Europe. He realised there was no book to settle such debates, so he decided to create a big collection of records.

The first edition of the book came out in 1955 and quickly became popular. People loved reading about amazing facts and achievements. Over time, the Guinness World Records started including records in many different categories like sports, entertainment, and science. It became a book that people couldn't live without, as it showed the incredible things humans are capable of.

The Guinness World Records celebrates what people can achieve. It shows the accomplishments of individuals who push the limits and inspire others to dream big. Whether it's the fastest runner or the tallest building, the records show how determined and clever people can be.

The book doesn't just focus on individuals. It also recognises what groups of people can do together. It celebrates teamwork and shows that when people work together, they can achieve great things. Whether it's a big event, where many people participate, or a charity project, the book proves that collaboration leads to amazing results.

The Guinness World Records is also a great tool for education. It sparks the curiosity of young minds and encourages them to learn. It can be found in classrooms and libraries all over the world, inspiring children to explore different subjects and use their imaginations. The incredible stories in the book make young readers believe in themselves and want to achieve great things too. On this day 3rd June 1978 The Guinness Book of Records entered the record book itself, as the most-stolen book from British libraries

With the internet and social media, the Guinness World Records has a new way to share amazing achievements. People can showcase their talents and attempt to break records in real time, and the whole world can watch. Social media campaigns and challenges make the book even more popular and inspire more people to try record-breaking.

The Guinness World Records has become more than just a book. It's a well-known brand associated with breaking records. It collaborates with media, TV shows, and live events to bring record-breaking excitement to audiences everywhere. Every year, on November 18th, the Guinness World Records Day celebrates record attempts from around the world, showing the diversity and innovation of human achievements.
