English reading practice - The Mars Odyssey (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

The Mars Odyssey is a spacecraft that was sent to Mars on this day 7th April, 2001 by NASA, the United States Space Agency. What is the Mars Odyssey and why it is an important mission in space exploration?

Launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on a Delta II rocket. It took seven months for the spacecraft to reach Mars, and it entered Mars' orbit on October 24, 2001. The Mars Odyssey is named after the classic science fiction novel "Odyssey" by Arthur C. Clarke.

The Mars Odyssey's main mission is to study the Martian surface and atmosphere. It has several instruments on board, including a camera that takes images of the surface, a spectrometer that measures the composition of the surface, and a radiation detector that measures the radiation environment around Mars. The Mars Odyssey has been able to map the surface of Mars in detail, and it has discovered evidence of water ice in the planet's soil.

It has been a very successful mission, and it has provided scientists with valuable information about Mars. It has also helped pave the way for future missions to Mars. In 2020, NASA sent the Perseverance rover to Mars, which is currently exploring the planet's surface and searching for signs of ancient life.

The Mars Odyssey is an important mission in space exploration. With the Perseverance rover currently on Mars, we are sure to learn even more about our neighbouring planet in the coming years.
