English reading practice - Trailblazing Journalist (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

In the world of news and media, there is someone that is well-recognised in the UK named Sir Trevor McDonald. He has been around for a long time and always gives us important news. This makes him very famous and respected.


Sir Trevor McDonald was born on this day 16th August 1939, in a place called Trinidad and Tobago. He loved stories and learning about the world from a very young age. After he finished school in his home country, he moved overseas and became a big part of British news.


Sir Trevor started working for the BBC in the 1960s. He could make people understand what was happening in the world and people liked him a lot because he could connect with them. He learned a lot in this time and became very good at his job.



During the 1970s, Sir Trevor faced some difficult times. He was the first black person to read the news on British TV, which was a very big step forward. This was important because it showed that anyone, no matter their background, could be on TV and share important news. He showed that different people should be part of the news to make everyone feel included.


As Sir Trevor's career went on, he got even more important roles. He became the main host of a news show called "News at Ten." This made him even more trusted by the British public. He talked about important things like big changes in politics and natural disasters, so people knew what was happening.


His influence didn't stay only in the UK. He made shows and interviews that people all around the world watched. He talked about important events in different places, like the struggle in South Africa and the elections in the United States. He was good at explaining complex things so everyone could understand.


Throughout his long career, Sir Trevor got many awards, BAFTA awards, which are important prizes in the world of TV and movies. He also got a special honour called an OBE for his work in broadcasting. In 1999, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, which is a huge honour in the UK.


Even though Sir Trevor stopped reading the news regularly in 2008, people still remember him. He is known for always telling the truth and telling stories that help us understand the world. To us, his name means honesty and well-explained stories.


He has shown that anyone can do important things, no matter where they come from. His journey from Trinidad and Tobago to becoming famous in British and global news is a great example of hard work and dedication. He has left a mark on future journalists, reminding us that sharing stories and knowledge can make a big impact on the world.
