English reading practice - Travel - Beat the Boredom of Long Haul (C1/C2 Advanced)

Are you gearing up for a long-haul flight? Whether you're jetting off to a far-flung destination or embarking on a cross-continental journey, spending hours confined to a plane seat doesn't have to be a bore. In fact, with a bit of creativity and preparation, your long-haul flight can turn into an adventure all on its own. So, fasten your seatbelt and get ready to make the most of your airborne voyage!

Pre-flight Preparation Party: The fun starts before you even board the plane! Take some time to curate your in-flight entertainment playlist, download your favourite movies, TV shows, podcasts, and games onto your devices, and don't forget to pack a good book or two. Having a variety of entertainment options at your fingertips will ensure that you stay entertained throughout the flight.

Channel Your Inner Chef: Airplane food may not always be the most exciting, but that doesn't mean you can't indulge in some culinary delights of your own. Pack some tasty snacks and treats to enjoy during the flight – think homemade sandwiches, trail mix, fruit, or even some decadent chocolates. Not only will it satisfy your hunger, but it'll also add a touch of gourmet flair to your journey.

Stretch Those Legs: Staying seated for an extended period can leave you feeling stiff and cramped. Combat the discomfort by getting up and stretching your legs regularly. Take a stroll up and down the aisle, do some simple stretches in the galley area, or even try some in-seat exercises to keep your blood flowing and your muscles relaxed.

Get Lost in the Clouds: Take advantage of the uninterrupted time to relax and unwind. Put on your favourite music, close your eyes, and let your mind wander. Whether you use the time to meditate, daydream, or simply enjoy the feeling of weightlessness as you soar through the clouds, a long-haul flight provides the perfect opportunity to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Strike Up a Conversation: One of the best things about air travel is the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. Strike up a conversation with your seatmate or chat with fellow passengers in the galley. You never know who you might meet or what interesting stories you might hear. Who knows, you might even make a new friend or two along the way!

Become a Time Traveler: If you're crossing multiple time zones, use the flight time to adjust your internal clock. Set your watch to the local time at your destination and try to align your activities – eating, sleeping, and waking – with that time zone. It'll help minimise jet lag and ensure that you hit the ground running when you arrive. For more tips on Jet Lag see my article here!

Play Travel Bingo: Create a travel bingo card with a list of things you might see or experience during the flight – a crying baby, a flight attendant with a distinctive accent, a spectacular sunset from 30,000 feet – and see how many you can tick off before touchdown. It's a fun way to pass the time and add an element of excitement to your journey. Or you can download mine here!

Plan Your Itinerary: Use the flight time to plan out your itinerary for your destination. Research activities, attractions, and restaurants you want to check out and make a rough schedule for your trip. Not only will it build excitement for your upcoming adventures, but it'll also ensure that you hit the ground running with a clear plan of action.

Catch Some Z's: Last but not least, take advantage of the opportunity to catch up on some much-needed sleep. Pack a comfortable travel pillow and blanket, adjust your seat to the most comfortable position, and drift off into dreamland. Waking up refreshed and rejuvenated upon arrival will make all the difference in starting your journey off on the right foot.

So, there you have it – a slew of fun and engaging activities to keep you entertained during your long-haul flight. With a little creativity and preparation, your time in the air can be just as exciting as your adventures on the ground. Bon voyage and happy travels!
