English reading practice - Water Vole (B1/B2 intermediate level English)

Let's explore the lovely wetlands and waterways in the United Kingdom today. We might meet a cute and hardworking animal there called the Eurasian Water Vole. It's known for looking adorable and playing an important role in keeping these places healthy. The water vole is a charming and crucial part of the UK's nature.

The Eurasian Water Vole is often just called the water vole. It's a small animal that lives near water. It has soft, brown fur and a round face that makes it look a bit like a teddy bear. These charming animals are often seen near rivers, streams, and wetlands, where they make special homes in the ground.

Water voles are good at living near water. They make tunnels in the ground near the water's edge, and their homes have secret entrances underwater. These tunnels keep them safe from other animals and bad weather.

Water voles only eat plants, so they are called herbivores. They like to eat different kinds of plants that grow near the water, like grass, sedges, and reeds. By eating these plants, they help to keep the waterways from getting too overgrown.

Water voles are also good swimmers. They spend a lot of time in the water, looking for food and staying away from animals that might want to eat them. They have strong bodies and webbed feet, which help them swim well.

Water voles are very close to their families. When it's time to have babies, they make nests in their tunnels. The mother water vole gives birth to three to six baby voles. Both the male and female voles take care of the babies and keep them safe.

But, water voles are in trouble in the UK. They are losing their homes because of changes in the places they live and pollution in the water. Also, there are some animals such as the American mink that hunt water voles which have affected the population numbers. Diseases like water vole tuberculosis are causing problems too.

People who care about nature and animals are working very hard to protect water voles. They are fixing the wetlands and removing the animals that cause problems. They are also keeping a close watch on water vole populations to make sure that they are safe.

The Eurasian Water Vole is special because it helps keep the wetlands healthy. Let's continue to enjoy and protect these cute animals so they can stay in the British countryside for a long time.
