On this day 13th April 2014, survey results on "What defines Britishness?" were released. So what do you think the main things were?
The question of what defines Britishness is a complex one that has been debated for centuries. It is an elusive concept that has evolved over time, and its definition is still subject to interpretation. However, there are some key elements that are often associated with Britishness.
One of the most important aspects of Britishness is the English language. English is the official language of the United Kingdom, and it is a significant part of the country's cultural identity. The English language has evolved over time, and it has been influenced by many other languages such as French, Latin, and German. The English language is used throughout large parts of the world for business, education, and daily communication, and it is considered an essential part of being British.
The United Kingdom has a rich and diverse history that is deeply embedded in the country's identity. British people are proud of their history, which includes monarchy, parliamentary democracy, and a unique culture. British traditions are also an essential part of the country's identity. The survey showed that customs such as afternoon tea, Morris dancing, and the Royal Family also make us feel more British.
Patriotism is a strong feeling of love and devotion to one's country. The survey showed that British people are patriotic and take pride in their country's achievements and values. They celebrate national holidays such as St. George's Day, the Queen's Birthday (at the time of the survey Britain was still ruled by a Queen), and Remembrance Day. The Union Jack, the national flag of the United Kingdom, is a symbol of Britishness and is often displayed with pride.
The United Kingdom is a multicultural society, with people from all over the world living and working together. Diversity and tolerance are important values that are closely linked to Britishness. The British believe everyone should be treated with respect and dignity, regardless of race, religion, or background. The survey showed that British people appreciate the diverse culture found within our country.
British people have a great sense of humour, which is often described as dry and sarcastic. British comedy has a long and proud tradition, and the country is famous for its comedians and TV shows such as Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, and Blackadder. British people love to laugh and have a good time, and their sense of humour is a significant part of their identity.
These are just some of the elements that make up Britishness, others were the BBC, pubs, William Shakespeare, the House of Commons and our weather and all contribute to the country's cultural identity. I'm surprised that our music didn't get a mention with so many amazing British musicians such as The Beatles, Adele, Queen, Ed Sheeran, Elton John and Harry Styles, as well as many, many others being well-known around the globe.
What is the thing that defines your country's identity? Do you think anything else should have been included? Let me know in the comments.
